Hey Reader! Did I get your attention? Good! This past week, I’ve been recovering from the shock of finding out I had $237K in student loan debt wiped out. Not only did I receive my debt forgiven, but so did my partner, my bestie, and several other friends. That’s almost $1M in student loan debt alone. A year ago, in response to the opposition to the proposed Biden student loan forgiveness program, I posted on LinkedIn that my student loan payment was more than my mortgage. Here’s the original post. Ironically, it was that post that went viral and started me on my LinkedIn journey. Student loan debt is an equity issue, and unfortunately, Black and Brown people have the most debt of all groups. As we drill down on the data, Black women have the lion's share of the debt because we are the most educated. Debt like that can be crippling and will prevent most people from being able to buy a home or live comfortably due to the debt-to-income ratio. A few days later, I listened to the White House briefing by the Undersecretary of Education, where he told us that to date, they had forgiven $1B in student loans with more on the way. They also rolled out a new Income-Driven Payment Plan (IDR) called the SAVE program, designed to lower payments to no more than 10% of income, forgiveness for borrowers with a certain income and no interest. The plan is based on income and family size. I’m still smiling from ear to ear. After a successful launch of the R.I.C.H.
